Forging a Singular Vision From a Many-Sided Talent

Meredith Monk’s career work has long been described, though hardly defined, in terms of its protean nature. Ms. Monk, 65, is a composer and a singer, true. But she is also a dancer and a choreographer, a director, a filmmaker and a conceptualist. She has performed most of her pieces herself, with an ensemble of versatile, sympathetic performers.

But lately Ms. Monk’s activities have revealed an effort to create some kind of formal musical legacy. In 2006 she led a Carnegie Hall workshop, training young performers in her exacting methods, and bequeathed her archives to the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts. Other performers are now playing her music, and she has published some of her works.

On Friday night at Symphony Space, Ms. Monk and her ensemble presented the first installment of Meredith Monk/Multi-Musics, a four-part series meant to demonstrate the sustainability and influence of her work. Coming events will feature current and former members of her group, as well as an ensemble made up of participants from the Carnegie workshop.
