JACK Quartet and The M6 Open the 2013 Look & Listen Festival
Live from Pratt Manhattan Gallery on May 17, 2013
On May 17, the 2013 Look & Listen Festival kicked off with performances by the JACK Quartet, the cello-piano duo of Nick Canellakis and Michael Brown and the a cappella group The M6. WQXR’s Terrance McKnight hosted.
The concert featured several world premieres, including a new work from American composer Lewis Nielson performed by the JACK Quartet. Nielson is the chair of the Composition Department at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music, whose Contemporary Music Ensemble presented a concert of his works at their most recent Carnegie Hall appearance.
The Canellakis-Brown duo – well-regarded for their artistry and sense of humor – presented a set of original duo and solo music, including a new multimedia work for cello, piano and video, entitled Self-Portrait. The M6, a vocal ensemble dedicated to performing the music of Meredith Monk, presented her Basket Rondo.
Program:
Michael Brown: Self-Portrait
Lewis Nielson: Le Journal du Corps
George Perle: Short Sonata
Meredith Monk: Basket Rondo
Witold Lutoslawski: Grave
Bulgarian Folk Songs: Gankino Horo / Daichovo Horo (arr. Nicholas Canellakis)
Audio credits: Bill Siegmund, engineer
